Your size is not a symbol of your worth, beauty, or identity.

You are bigger than a body.

Welcome, fellow body occupant.

I’m Mikaela. If you’re struggling with food, body image, or exercise, you’re in the right place.

I hope you stick around and learn more about my coaching services, my personal eating disorder recovery story, and the inspiration behind Bigger Than a Body LLC.

What It Means to “Be Recovered” from an
Eating Disorder/Disordered Eating

I spun my wheels for years trying to come up with a definition that wholly sums up what it means to have complete food and body freedom. I always revert to the definition of “being recovered” coined by eating disorder recovery badass Carolyn Costin, which is:

“Being recovered is when you can accept your natural body size and shape and no longer have a self-destructive or unnatural relationship with food or exercise.

When you are recovered, food and weight take a proper perspective in your life and what you weigh is not more important than who you are. In fact, actual numbers are of little or no importance at all.

When recovered, you will not compromise your health or betray your soul to look a certain way, wear a certain size or reach a certain number on a scale.

When you are recovered, you do not use eating disorder behaviors to deal with, distract from, or cope with other problems.”

– Carolyn Costin, MA, MEd, LMFT, CEDS, FAED

Recovery coaching is not limited to those who have been diagnosed with an eating disorder. If you identify with one or more of the following statements, it could be a viable option for you.

  • *

I attach my worth and self-esteem to how much I eat, how much I exercise, and how much I weigh.

  • *

I often lean on destructive eating or exercise behaviors to cope with stress, problems, or heightened emotions.

  • *

I have obsessive thoughts about food and feel out of control or anxious when I eat.

  • *

I regularly restrict, binge, and/or purge my food.

  • *

I have a long history of dieting and weight fluctuations.

  • *

I feel guilty or ashamed when I eat foods I find unhealthy or off-limits.
